On my mind: The Winter Cold and Flu Season

We are really heading into cold and flu season now. Do yourself, and everyone else, a favor and take the initiative to be responsible for your own immune system this winter. Feed and strengthen it now by eating lots of nutrient dense foods, such as dark leafy greens (broccoli, kale, spinach), cruciferous veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, bok choy, cabbage), onions, garlic, fruits, whole grains, and foods high in antioxidants (berries, yams, green tea, hibiscus tea, and Amla powder). And don’t forget the nuts, seeds, and mushrooms! (If you can’t stand mushrooms, take a supplement, such as Fungi Perfecti by Host Defense. They are just dried and ground up mushrooms in a capsule.)

Make green smoothies in the morning, have lots of salads with oil-free dressing, and include whole foods high on the nutrient density scale at every meal rather than cheap processed foods. Don’t tie up your immune system by forcing it to fight the inflammation induced by animal products. If you simply must eat those, try to make them less than 10% of your calories.

Don’t think you can rely on scam products like Airborne to protect you from colds and flu, or megadoses of vitamin C, either. Food is a package deal, and extracting one nutrient deprives it, and you, from benefitting by the synergy of that nutrient with all the other nutrients in that food. Eat the whole food and skip the Airborne.

Remember to get plenty of exercise, too, as it helps your lymph system to move the toxins out of your body. The lymph system is similar to the circulatory system but lacks a pump like the heart. So exercise causes the muscle contractions that help the lymph system do its job.

Bottom line, if you take responsibility for your own immune system, you won’t need to destroy the beneficial bacteria on your hands by constantly dousing them in hand sanitizer, nor will you feel that you must avoid your friends because you fear they may have been exposed to something. And you can be healthy and happy all winter long!
